Wrexham County Borough Council (WCBC) is responsible for delivering essential services to residents across the Wrexham County Borough in Wales. Following the Welsh government's £50 million investment in 2020 to level up educational technology and develop a new curriculum that focused on digital skills and creativity, WCBC partnered with boxxe Group to modernise their school infrastructure and create a sustainable, future-ready learning environment.

Results

Our partnership with WCBC has delivered transformational results across their entire education estate. By combining Cisco Meraki's cutting-edge network infrastructure with our innovative WiserWatts energy management solution and Nucleus automation platform, we've created a sustainable, cost-effective tech ecosystem that supports modern digital learning whilst significantly reducing environmental impact and operational costs.

Challenge

When the Welsh government allocated £50 million to transform education tech and support a new digital-first curriculum, WCBC needed to upgrade network infrastructure across 70 schools serving over 20,000 students.

Their existing infrastructure lacked centralised management, consumed excessive energy, and couldn't support modern digital learning demands. WCBC required a partner who could deliver a comprehensive solution addressing efficiency, sustainability, and long-term value across the entire school estate.

Plan

To make this transformation as seamless as possible, we worked closely with WCBC to develop a streamlined network and device deployment plan, which would deliver a solution which met all of their needs.

Approach

We started by deploying Cisco Meraki network and Wi-Fi infrastructure across all 70 schools, creating unified network infrastructure with centralised visibility and control. Followed by implementing our Nucleus automation platform to streamline the provisioning process, and ensure consistent deployment across the entire estate.

Once the network foundation was in place, we integrated our WiserWatts energy management solution to reduce electricity consumption and carbon emissions.

Finally, we deployed Meraki MT10 environmental sensor tech to monitor the temperature and humidity across 160 communications rooms, helping WCBC to optimise energy usage.

Outcome

WCBC achieved a 52% reduction in overnight Wi-Fi electricity usage, saving over £24,000 in fiscal year 2023-2024 and reducing carbon emissions by an estimated ten metric tons annually. Beyond cost and environmental savings, WCBC now benefits from modern, unified network infrastructure supporting digital learning across their entire estate.

This partnership demonstrates how cutting-edge tech, automation, and innovative energy management delivers measurable value across cost savings, sustainability, and service quality.

"One of the things we are finding out, and working with our partners with boxxe Group, is how we can leverage the information the platform gives us to better understand the estate that we have. It is the ingenuity of technology partners that enabled us to build the provisioning system, that we were able to provision a network for a secondary school, in a couple of hours."
