Cancer Research UK (CRUK) is the world's leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. They fund scientists, doctors, and nurses to help beat cancer sooner and provide cancer information to the public. Their pioneering work into the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer has seen survival rates double over the last 40 years. The charity relies on the generosity of supporters and fundraisers to continue their life-saving work across the UK.

Results

We delivered a cost-effective backup and recovery solution that gave CRUK the adaptability they needed whilst lowering costs. The charity now has accurate backups of block and file data, virtual machines, and mission-critical applications with the ability to back up all data with a very small footprint. Data Domain de-duplication minimises backup windows, enabling CRUK to confidently back up within overnight windows without concern of backups running into the next business day.

Break-even point within 18 months

We delivered a cost-effective backup and recovery solution that substantially lowered costs compared to their current managed service provider.

9.6 times average compression ratio

Our EMC Data Domain de-duplication solution enables cost-effective data replication between data centres over an existing one GB IP pipe.

Complete data protection across three sites

We deployed backup and disaster recovery capabilities across CRUK's two data centres and external customer-facing infrastructure.

Challenge

CRUK had initially outsourced its backup and recovery infrastructure but found this was cost prohibitive and not as flexible as it needed. They faced high backup costs from their managed service provider and needed a private cloud strategy requiring a VMware-compatible backup solution so they could back up virtual machines as well as physical servers, and provide de-duplication.

Plan

We developed a comprehensive strategy to replace CRUK's legacy storage with a more cost-effective solution that would provide the flexibility and disaster recovery capabilities they needed to continue their life-saving work.

Approach

We deployed EMC VNX unified storage, the EMC FAST Suite, Flash drives, and related software to replace CRUK's legacy storage. We also deployed Data Domain for backup as a more cost-effective solution than third-party backup processes.

Outcome

We successfully deployed a cost-effective backup and recovery solution for CRUK, replacing their legacy storage. CRUK now has the confidence that its virtual machine, as well as block and file data, are fully protected – supporting their critical mission in the fight against cancer.

With Data Domain deployed at CRUK's two data centres located 50 miles apart, each system can now back up data stored in EMC VNX unified storage and replicate the data between data centres to provide secure and reliable disaster recovery.
