Challenge

As early adopters of Meraki technology with 1,400 franchised stores across the UK, Domino's wanted to unlock the full potential of the platform API to optimise network efficiencies and reduce waste. They needed intelligent insights into port utilisation across offices and distribution locations, a solution to track end-of-life equipment across the business, and a way to align their IT strategy with company-wide sustainability goals.

Additionally, following a minor out-of-hours incident, they recognised the need for robust backup and recovery protection to ensure continuous service for franchisees who depend on the network to serve customers without delay.

Plan

We worked closely with Domino's to develop a comprehensive strategy that would unlock the power of their Meraki platform whilst addressing sustainability and operational efficiency goals using WiserWatts, Assure, and custom API integrations.

Approach

We began by deploying Network Intelligence (NI) powered by boxxe Labs to provide visibility and actionable insights across their network through a single lens dashboard, followed by WiserWatts for automated energy management.

We also linked WiserWatts to Meraki Smart Cameras, creating an innovative and sustainable solution where computer-vision based people detection tech automatically powers up the network when people enter the building — enabling truly on-demand connectivity and reducing energy consumption. 

Finally, we activated our Assure cloud backup service, providing rapid recovery capabilities, to ensure minimal disruptions whilst protecting brand reputation across all of Domino’s franchises.

Outcome

Our NI solution immediately revealed over 1,500 underutilised ports across offices and distribution locations, which enables the team to optimise, reuse, and recycle unused switches to other projects instead of investing in new equipment.

Powered by boxxe Labs, NI also made end-of-life product tracking simple. When Cisco announced various end-of-life dates for the Meraki Switch range, the dashboard enabled Domino's to easily identify affected products and formulate a future networking strategy underpinned by a Catalyst Switching platform. Through NI, 1,000 of the 1,500 underutilised ports have been removed and reused elsewhere within the business, reducing unnecessary spend and energy consumption whilst contributing to Domino's sustainability goals. 

The innovative WiserWatts and Meraki Smart Camera integration has created a powerful piece of technology that automatically powers up network connectivity only when needed. Currently deployed at Head Office, this solution has enormous potential across their 1,400 franchised stores for amplified cost savings and energy reduction.

With Assure providing backup protection, Domino's has what Head of Platform Engineering Michael Chute calls "my insurance policy" — ensuring they can sleep soundly knowing their data is protected and they can rapidly restore services should the worst happen. This gives franchisees confidence that the network they depend on will be available continuously to serve customers without delay.
