Time is running out to upgrade from vSphere 7
When VMware was acquired by Broadcom in 2023 it raised a whole host of questions. One thing, however, is crystal clear and needs action immediately.
Over the years, VMware ESXi has been updated and upgraded like any software product. This is inevitable, adapting to changes in hardware standards, maintaining compatibility with software partners and staying on top of the global threat landscape. V8 was released as far back as 2022 and now we also have VCF9. Advice has long been to upgrade but if you’re running v7 (or v6 even), you’re not alone.
Globally, VMware has over 800,000 customers and it’s estimated that well over half are still running an old version of ESXi. To that end, Broadcom even extended the EOL (End of Life) date from April 2025 to October 2025 in an attempt to help those customers find time to upgrade… but that time is running out.
It seems like a no brainer then to upgrade and here at boxxe, we would suggest it is. When v7 goes EOL all updates (from Broadcom) will cease. That means your host servers will be a major security risk and, like so many well publicised EOL software dates, it will become a target for those in the business who want to attack your data.
What do you need to know if you have to upgrade?
Firstly, if you have licenses to run VMware v7 (or before) you are more than entitled to continue to do so. Assuming you accept that security risk that comes with a lack of updates.
- This will impact Cyber Essentials or ISO27001 accreditations, if you have them. In other words, you will no longer be compliant.
If you do want to upgrade you must now move to the new subscription-based licensing scheme. In other words, you cannot simply go back to Broadcom and ask to renew your support. Under the new rules you must move to a subscription-based scheme which, in turn, includes support.
- In a bold move, Broadcom consolidated the product range to just four versions, all with very clear use cases and functionality. This simplified the choice for customers and will make your life easy when it comes to moving forwards.
Once you have purchased the new subscription-based licenses you will be free to upgrade to v8 or VCF9.
