The British Transport Police (BTP) is a special national police force which polices over 10,000 miles of track, 3,000 stations and depots across the railway networks of England, Wales and Scotland.

BTP also polices the London Underground, Docklands Light Railway, the West Midlands Metro, Tramlink, as well as the Glasgow Subway, London Cable Car and part of the Tyne and Wear Metro.

BTP is the UK’s most geographically dispersed force, serving over 1 billion passengers annually.

Results

A seamless solution from legacy to the latest generation platform

We successfully upgraded the BTP from a legacy Digital Evidence Unit (DEU) environment to the latest generation Dell Powescale Platform, perfectly suited to their data storage needs. Our team worked hard to deliver the full solution seamlessly; from the initial planning and design right through to final installation, configuration, training, handover and documentation.

Upgrade
to Dell Technologies Powerscale

We designed, planned and deployed a complete Digital Evidence Unit (DEU) platform upgrade using Dell Technologies Powerscale.

2.1 PB
Scaled from 1.3 PB to 2.1 PB

Following initial deployment of the 1.3 PB environment, we’ve scaled BTP’s data storage to 2.1 PB.

Latest gen
Full enterprise solution

We moved BTP from a non-enterprise legacy environment to the latest generation full enterprise solution.

Challenge

BTP needed compliance with the safe-handling and storage of highly sensitive data

After UK policing data was found to be non-compliant with UK data-protection and sovereignty laws, BTP wanted to take fast action to ensure compliance with the safe-handling and storage of highly sensitive data. BTP put out a tender to refresh their legacy DEU infrastructure and environment to the latest generation full enterprise solution.

Plan

Strict time, cost and security requirements

Having worked with them for over 10 years across a wide range of technologies, we were excited to build on our previous relationship with the BTP team. To secure the tender, we had to adhere to strict time, cost and security requirements. With this in mind, our team kicked the project off with a consultation-led engagement to capture the current state of the DFU platform and get a better understanding of the desired outcome based on tech, budget and working practices.

Approach

Selecting Dell Technologies Powerscale Platform

Following extensive consultation, our infrastructure team set about planning, deploying, and configuring their new DFU environment. Given the nature of BTP’s critical data, we selected a Dell Technologies Powerscale Platform for the file-based storage and replicated Disaster Recovery (DR) across 2 physical secure locations.

Outcome

Full enterprise solution with DR, fail over, replication and tiered storage

With 2.1PB of sensitive data now on the Dell Technologies Powerscale platform, BTP successfully upgraded from an non-enterprise, aged legacy environment to our full enterprise solution which also offers DR, fail over, replication and tiered storage. Following a seamless transition with no downtime, we’ve continued to support the in-house team and have already delivered the first major capacity upgrade.

And due to the success of the project, we’ve now scaled our engagement with BTP, providing replacements for core storage as well as other necessary upgrades.

“Thank you to the boxxe team.Their professional handling of the project, combined with their technical expertise and deep understanding of data protection laws, made for a seamless transition to our new and improved DFU platform.”
