| THE CHARITY
The Turing Trust
The charity supports education in sub-Saharan Africa by reusing computers and improving teacher training through ICT. They provide skills development in the UK, while reducing waste and contributing to an environmentally friendly society.
The Turing Trust provides the following services for free:
- Accredited data destruction to the British HMG InfoSec and ISO Standards
- Social impact as they reuse PCs in schools
- Environmental impact as their activities offset carbon emissions
| THE SOLUTION
Easy to manage asset disposal
Managing asset disposal is a bit of a headache for most organisations. But not for boxxe’s client Thirteen Group, who have partnered with The Turing Trust. Thirteen’s redundant ICT equipment is collected and certificates of data destruction are provided.
41,000 more students educated digitally
As a result of this partnership, Thirteen to reduce their disposal costs whilst making an environmental and social impact, so far they have:- Made a saving of 80% on their previous recycling costs
- Contributed to the charity’s total 4,200 reused PCs which has
- Enabled the digital education of another 41,000 students
Environmental impact
Reusing PCs, rather than recycling, moves them up the waste hierarchy offsetting the CO2 emissions associated with prematurely recycling functional ICT equipment. In this case, the 54 PCs donated by Thirteen offset 31 tonnes of CO2 emissions – the equivalent to planting 78 trees, or offsetting the annual carbon footprint of 3 people in the UK. The refurbishment process and long-term maintenance services provided by the trust in Malawi also allows them to significantly extend the lifetime of donated PCs.
| THE OPPORTUNITY
How can you get involved?
We’ve set up a process so that our clients can donate their old IT equipment to the Turing Trust simply and easily.
They accept most working ICT equipment ranging from desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones all the way to power cables, headphones and mice. Find here a full list of the ICT equipment we can use.
This initiative offers peace of mind regarding data destruction and the chance to see old computers have a new lease of life, whilst providing fantastic educational opportunities in Africa.
Equipment can be sent to boxxe in York, directly to the Turing Trust’s workshop in Edinburgh, or collected UK-wide from any offices.
