York College Launches First UK Cybersecurity Degree

York College, renowned for offering the widest range of courses in the region, has taken a significant step in addressing the UK's IT skills gap. Partnering with tech solutions provider boxxe, the college launched the country's first Foundation Degree in Digital Technologies with a focus on cybersecurity. This initiative aims to equip students with industry-relevant skills to meet the growing demand for cyber security professionals.

In 2023, 93% of UK businesses reported an IT skills gap, emphasising the urgent need for trained professionals in this field. With the digital landscape evolving rapidly, the demand for cybersecurity skills has surged, leaving many companies struggling to find qualified staff. Recognising this challenge, York College sought to bridge the gap by offering specialised education and training.

York College, with the expertise of boxxe, designed and configured a state-of-the-art cybersecurity lab. This facility is equipped with the latest hardware and software tools, ensuring that students receive hands-on, practical experience with cutting-edge tech. The lab supports the college's Foundation Degree in Digital Technologies, providing a robust learning environment that mirrors real-world scenarios.

To establish the lab, boxxe conducted a comprehensive assessment of the college's needs, aligning them with industry standards and future trends in cyber security. The project was meticulously planned, with budgets and deadlines carefully managed to ensure timely delivery and optimal functionality.

The collaboration between York College and boxxe has yielded significant outcomes. The new cybersecurity lab has enabled the college to offer a high-quality, hands-on Foundation Degree in Digital Technologies with cyber security, which commenced in September 2020. Additionally, for those already employed and seeking further qualifications, the college provides the BCS Level-4 Apprenticeship – Cyber Security Technologist. This part-time route offers flexibility for working professionals to upskill and enhance their careers.
