What is unstructured data?

Unstructured Data refers to information that doesn't follow a predefined format or organised structure, making it more challenging to analyse and process.  Unlike neatly arranged data found in spreadsheets or databases, unstructured data lacks clear categories or labels.

What does Unstructured Data look like?

It includes things like text from emails, social media posts, audio recordings, images, videos, and documents.  Because of its free-flowing nature, extracting valuable insights from unstructured data requires advanced technologies, like artificial intelligence and natural language processing, to understand and interpret the content effectively.

What are the Challenges of Unstructured Data?

Dealing with unstructured data presents difficulties.  This info lacks organisation, complicating analysis.  Furthermore, it's often in non-relational databases, posing querying challenges.  Key issues include:

  1. Security complexity:  Unstructured data's dispersion across formats and locations makes securing it intricate.

  2. Indexing challenges:  Due to its randomness, indexing is tough and error-prone.

  3. Data scientist dependence:  Interpreting unstructured data often demands skilled data scientists.

  4. Costly analytics tools:  Parsing such data requires advanced, expensive analytics software, not always budget-friendly.

  5. Format diversity:  Unstructured data's lack of format hampers its raw use.

Why is it important?

A lot of data, essential for tackling complex issues, can't be stored in databases, such as customer buying patterns when mapped to social media feeds, another example is CCTV, you need to refer to it at a later date, but can’t store video files in a database - these are both forms of Unstructured Data.

Did you know 80% of data growth in an organisation is unstructured data?
