After 11 years, Windows Server 2012 is approaching the end of its life

Compact Discs, CRT screens, VHS, fax machines, pagers… It’s time to add Windows Server 2012 to the list!

What is an end of life product?

An end-of-life (EOL) product is a product at the end of the product lifecycle which prevents users from receiving updates.  A vendor will stop the marketing, selling or provisioning of parts, services, or software updates for the product.  Users can continue to access discontinued products, but cannot receive security updates and technical support.

When does Windows Server 2012 reach end of life?

The Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 end-of-life deadline is fast approaching.  This product will reach end of life on 10th October, 2023.

What are the end-of-life risks of Windows Server 2012?

Once a product reaches end of life it will no longer receive regular patches or security updates, bug fixes, or technical support.

This means your organisation will be at risk of:

  • Security vulnerabilities - Windows Server 2012 will no longer receive security patches and updates, making it more susceptible to cyberattacks and exploitation of known vulnerabilities.

  • Invalid cyber insurance - Running EOL software will likely invalidate your cyber insurance since most policies don’t cover incidents when you are running outdated software or operating systems.

  • Non compliance - Running an unsupported server operating system can result in non-compliance, leading to fines, penalties, or even loss of business licences.

It's time to retire Windows Server 2012 which reaches end of life on 10th October 2023

What should I do next?

If your organisation is still using servers running Windows Server 2012, it is highly recommended that you take action as soon as possible.

Microsoft recommends customers migrate applications and workloads to Azure to run securely.  Alternatively, customers needing an on-premise solution should upgrade to a newer version.
