Last year, boxxe lost an amazing coworker to bowel cancer.  To honour his memory and raise awareness of this little-known cancer, our boxxers got together to walk for their friend and colleague James Eaglen, in partnership with Bowel Cancer UK.

Get outside and move!

James was such a lovely person to work with, he was easy to talk to, hardworking and always wanted the best for the company and people at boxxe.  He was a very gentle soul and would make you feel at ease when you spoke to him and would always help you out when you needed support.

After his passing, many expressed a desire to do something to celebrate James’ life – and raise awareness of the disease that took him far too soon.

It only seemed right to honour such a ‘gentle soul’ with an activity that is ‘good for the soul’; getting outside and moving.  Team members had the opportunity to walk (or run!) 5K, 10K or 20K and spend some quality hours out in the fresh, autumn air.

A life cut short reminds us to be present

boxxers walked alone and others together, using their community hours to take a break from work and walk for James.  Wellbeing is such an important focus at boxxe, so it was great to hold an event which actively encouraged people to take a deep breath, reflect and spend some time in nature.

I worked with James for a couple of years, and every single time I spoke to him he was just the loveliest man. He never had a bad word to say about anyone and was always really positive. It was really nice to take a couple of hours out of the work day to go for a walk in the sunshine with my dog in James’s memory.

We’re really proud of the turn out. It’s a great way to show other people that if you want to promote employee health and wellbeing, you can’t just talk the talk – you have to walk the walk too:

  • Overall 33 people took part in the challenge

  • Walking or running a collective 505 kilometres across the month of November

  • Totaling 190.5 community hours

The work doesn’t stop there

We kicked off our charity partnership with an online awareness talk, where boxxers had the opportunity to find out more about the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of bowel cancer.

We’re also planning to hold more walks in 2024 and host some other events to fundraise for the charity – there’s even talk of a boxxe quiz night!

It’s the little things we do that can have a big impact.  And in the case of James, his many acts of strength, courage and kindness have now become the fuel that feeds boxxe’s community ‘fire’.  By working with charities like Bowel Cancer UK, we can nurture the physical and mental wellbeing of our team and beyond.  Because it’s the people who make boxxe the company it is, and we’re strongest when we can put our best foot forward.

To James Eaglen, with love and admiration from your fellow boxxers.
